Right on Google’s Tail, Nokia Pushes Indoor Mapping Too

In what may have been the most modern version of Manifest Destiny to date, Google spent the better part of the last decade mapping the great outdoors. And on Tuesday, the company announced its intention to continue that quest, only indoors.

Naturally, there will be latecomers to any party. Enter Nokia, which announced its own initiative for indoor mapping services at an event in Sunnyvale, CA on Tuesday. full article

I don't see the impetus for this project. Yes, of course it's possible, but are people frequently overwhelmed by their indoor habitats? Problems navigating to the WC at a friends party? Nokia is masterfully selecting a problem to solve that doesn't really exist.

Zune has MILLIONS of songs and MILLIONS of bands...

And you listen to Nickelback..?

I am glad that nokia now is coming up with much better apps and mobile phones as compare to their last year

Ah yes.. nokia maps.. tried the free version of it last year. By far the worst mapping application I've ever seen. It's counter intuitive to the extreme and has no settings.

I don't know what weird version you use, but I navigated through the whole of Balticum this summer and the N8 with OVI maps was far more brilliant than the car's TomTom. Nokia Maps is very good.

Oh, once you finally got it to accept input it works.

What ever happened to privacy? No-one other than me needs to know where I am if I'm not at work. How long before our houses are mapped and heat sensors triangulate our whereabouts and that information is sent to Big Brother? Does turning off a smart phone's GPS do any good anymore? The only hope I have for this crap is maybe the post office will be able to find the right house to deliver my neighbour's mail to THEIR mailbox rather than mine.
