The hackers compromised the credit-card data of more than 80,000 customers and used the data to make millions of dollars of unauthorized purchases, according to the indictment (.pdf). full article

My bad. For a second i thought this read 'Four Romulans...' everyone knows the Romulans prefer Qiznos.
POS has a different meaning in many cases - Piece Of (Rude word for excrement).
Actually, that is a pretty appropriate term for the cheapo software from Radiant that is described in the article.
Wow seriously you install remote desktop software and use a password like that.
right? and now those restaurants want to sue? that's like suing the lock company because you forgot to lock your doors and the criminals ransacked your house. people need to get a clue that security is EVERYONE'S responsibility, not just "the other guys".
These are not hackers, they are script kiddies!
Damn, guys like these make me fell ashamed for being a Romanian, when I hear this kind of news.
I'd be more ashamed to setup as a technician the same password on 200+ machines..
Or, as the owner of the systems the software is installed on I would be ashamed that I didn't perform more due diligence on the robustness of the platforms security. It's still both parties responsibility. Caveat Emptor (and this is a true usage of the phrase) - if you hire someone to install software you better damn well ask them what the admin passwords are because the FIRST thing you should do is go change them. If you incur damages after the fact, that's on you.
